2015 in 500 words and
4 important facts

December 21, 2015 - Opinion

Christmas holidays are approaching again. As is the New Year. For many people Christmas is the moment to look back at the past year and to make plans for the upcoming year, personally and professionally. What went well? What could be better? Have I missed anything in this age of information overload? Are these questions you ask yourself? Let me help you a little bit by summarizing some of the most remarkable facts of 2015 in the world of modern marketing.

Fact 1. The Marketing Technology Landscape doubled in 2015.

The edition of 2015 marketing technology landscape shows 1,876 vendors represented across 43 categories. To actually be able to read it, you really need to zoom and scroll, and then zoom and scroll some more. The number of vendors has doubled. In 2014 the overview showed just 947 companies. Maybe a good idea to start thinking about hiring a Chief Marketing Technologist to support you?

Fact 2. Almost 50% of all emails are opened on a mobile device.

Even though 1 out of 2 emails are opened on a mobile device, not all emails are mobile friendly. Litmus shows that mobile-friendly emails are increasing. However, 44% of all emails are still mobile unfriendly desktop centric designed. Food for thought…are all your emails mobile friendly? What about the website and/or the landing page after the click?

Fact 3. 98% of marketers say online and offline marketing is merging.

Finally, the label is gone. Digital marketing is not just an expertise anymore but just one of the skills which you need as a marketer. Offline and online may be merged on paper, but has everybody transformed completely? Doesn’t look like it. Gartner says in their 2015-2016 CMO Spend Survey that only about a third can say that their digital marketing activities are fully incorporated into the overall marketing operation. So what is happening in your company? Has your team fully incorporated the digital marketing function?

Fact 4. 62% of Millennials feel that (good and relevant) online content drives their loyalty to a brand.

Millennials today value quality over quantity when it comes to content marketing. A nice quote regarding a survey of NewsCred says “Millennials don’t want to have to work to find the value in a sea of sales messages”. So more than ever it is important to really know your (future) customer and to be a partner for them by constantly creating snackable, high value, relevant and helpful content. So what kind of content are you serving your audience? Is it adapted to the people who buy your products or services?
